Happy Gum Disease Awareness Month

Are you worried that you may have gum disease? Knowing the warning signs of gum disease can help you take steps to prevent it from progressing. Some of the warning signs of gum disease include gums that are bleeding, red, swollen, puffy or tender gums that no longer hug your teeth, bad breath, pus between your teeth and gums, feeling that your teeth are loose, and a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.

Preventing gum disease is vital to maintaining good oral health. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes each time, clean between your teeth with floss to remove plaque and food from areas your toothbrush can't reach, eat a healthy diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks, and visit your dentist at least two times a year for a checkup exam and dental cleaning.

Several factors may increase your chances of developing gum disease, such as not brushing your teeth regularly, tobacco use, diseases that lower your immunity, medications that cause dry mouth, pregnancy, and having a spouse or loved one with gum disease. At your regular dental checkups, your gums will be evaluated, and any concerns will be discussed with options for care.

Gum disease has been linked to other diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. High stress is also associated with gum disease. Treatment for gum disease depends on how badly affected the gums are. For mild disease, a professional dental cleaning 3 to 4 times a year may be needed. More advanced cases will require a "deep cleaning" where the deposits stuck to the roots of the teeth are removed. The most advanced cases need the attention of a specialist called a Periodontist.

This February, make sure to take advantage of Children's Dental Health Month and get sealants to prevent tooth decay. Sealants help all teeth resist decay and are not just for children. Schedule an appointment with your dentist to see if dental sealants can benefit you.
