Happy November!

Did you know that November is TMJ Awareness Month!

The Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is responsible for allowing the lower jaw to move and withstands up to 200 lbs of force. However, it's essential that the TMJ hinges properly in the joint socket to avoid pain. TMJ Disorder (TMD) refers to the dysfunction of the joint and is a common condition, with an estimated 3 million cases reported each year.

TMD can affect people as young as 14 years old, and any condition that forces the jaw to hinge towards the rear of the joint socket can cause symptoms. Common symptoms of TMD include clicking and popping of the joint, headaches, migraines, dizziness, ringing in the ears, excessive wear on teeth, severe pain all over the head, neck pain, earaches, and sensitivity to light.

While Botox is often used to reduce wrinkles, it can also be helpful in breaking the pain cycle caused by muscles not allowing the jaw to move into proper alignment. Dr. Estler has been treating people with TMD for over 20 years, using specialized oral appliances that re-establish the natural space at the rear of the joint and allow the jaw to hinge at the proper part of the joint socket.
