September is National Gum Care Month, which makes it the perfect time to learn more about how to take care of your gums. Most of us know that brushing and flossing are important parts of dental hygiene, but do you know why your gums are just as important? The answer is simple: your gums support and connect your teeth to your jaw, which is why it's crucial to keep them healthy.

Gum disease is chronic and painless, except in the final stages when the teeth become loose and infection sets in. Gum disease is an inflammatory disease that not only causes tooth loss but is associated with other diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. The first sign of gum disease includes gums that bleed easily and look red and puffy around the teeth.

Gum disease can be prevented by regular dental cleanings at least every 6 months. Daily flossing and use of a WaterPik or water flosser are great tools when you’re not in for your appointments. And if you think you’re suffering from gum disease, make sure to schedule an appointment with us and we will help determine the health of your gums.

In the meantime, if you are suffering from painful gums, mouth rinses with peroxide can help with minor discomfort but pain is an indicator that something more serious is occurring.

As a reminder! We are doing no-cost orthodontic consultations! These are perfect to go over any of your orthodontic needs including Reveal Clear Tray Aligners. For those interested in straightening their teeth without metal braces, these aligners are a great way to ensure a beautiful smile. Give us a call to schedule your appointment.
