Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Therapy

TMJ really refers to the joint that connects the lower jaw, called the mandible, to the bone at the side of the head- the temporal bone.  The joint has both hinge and sliding motions.  This combination makes this joint among the most complicated joints in the body.

Symptoms of TMJ disfunction include:  popping or clicking of the joint, dizziness, headaches, ringing in the ears, earaches, toothaches, facial pain, inability to open the mouth, neck pain, sensitivity to light and a change in the way the upper and lower teeth come together.  Symptoms are caused by the misalignment of the joint causing compressions of the nerves, blood vessles and ear canal.   Trauma plays a role in some cases.   But for most, misalignment of the teeth and stress are major causes of TMJD.  Stress and malocclusion lead to clenching and grinding of the teeth.  These forces put pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other structures around the jaw.

Other factors that can aggravate TMJD are:  poor posture, poor diet, lack of sleep, and missing, fractured or decayed teeth.

Dr. Estler's TMJ Therapy involves re-establishing the normal alignment of the joint to relive the pressure on the ear canal, nerves and blood vessles.  By using custom appliances, Dr. Estler can help you find pain relief and prevent fruther damage to the TMJ.

Our therapy involves three phases.

Phase I:  Custom Bite Guides find the position of the jaw that relieves your symptoms.

Phase II:  Once symptoms are relieved, a custom permanent appliance is made to support this TMJ position.

Phase III:  Some patients benefit from orthodontics to correct the bite.
